Our Mission

As a nonprofit organization, the Studio's actions are centered around its mission, which is simply - to inspire & support the use of digital media technologies within the local community. To this end the Studio seeks to:

  • Provide a professional production studio environment.
  • Lead & model the use of digital media technologies in serving community needs.
  • Stimulate & support local economies, including entrepreneurial and nonprofit activity.
  • Provide valuable apprenticeship and professional development opportunities.

The Studio's current staff include 4 full-time employees, 1 part-time position, and a director. The Studio is also entering the 2nd year of a project working with an instructor and course in the Telecommunications department at BGSU.

Studio History

Sea Lion Studio began as the name of the location where a private company - Sea Lion Estates, LLC - operated, in a downtown storefront building at 182 S. Main St. in Bowling Green. The space was meant as an environment for clients and possible customers - and the general public - to experience digital media tools in use, to better understand the capabilities of the new technologies, and to take steps in beginning to use the tools for themselves. In the course of developing the different work going on, it was determined to set up Sea Lion Studio, Inc., as a stand-alone nonprofit organization so it could be free to focus on its mission separate from the other interests of Sea Lion Estates.

A fire in the S. Main St. building in early 2004 forced the Studio to re-locate its production services and to set aside the performance and gallery space offerings. Development began on the BG File project during this time. Studio production crews started appearing at community events and activities, and the website bgfile.com went online as a community resource and platform.

In the spring of 2006 the studio re-opened in its current location on the edge of the downtown district at 141 E. Court St., directly across the street from the Wood County Courthouse and within easy walking distance of the campus.

Technology & The Community

For the community to engage in activity and business online, community members - as well as the local activities and businesses - will need to have the necessary skills and hardware capabilities.

The following questions help gauge the level of local use of digital media technologies:

  • Have you bought something online from a local retailer (can you)?
  • Have you seen a local person on video?
  • Have you used local entertainment or information provided on DVD, CD or online?
  • Do you do local business-to-business online (commerce, transfers, tracking)?
  • Where would you go for local digital media technology help?

Digital media technologies have changed many aspects of communication and exchange, opening new opportunities for businesses of all sizes, but especially for small-to-medium and new businesses and locally focused activity. Sea Lion Studio takes on the role of a catalyst to help see that these opportunities are not missed or lost out on.

The Studio & The University
